Lifecycle Quality: The "Tipping Point" of SOA Governance  members

Service Oriented Architectures have reached the Tipping Point. Recent analyst research shows SOA adoption has gone from experimentation to the mainstream within Fortune 1000 companies, with estimates of SOA planning or implementation rates as high as 80% in 2006.

The good news is, there is now empirical proof that SOA has not only become mainstream, but many SOA initiatives are providing true business benefits, by making companies more adaptive to change, through reusable services that can be linked together to address business requirements, and extended or modified quickly to adapt to changing business requirements.

So what has created the demand for SOA, and if it seems like such an obvious strategy, why are companies encountering disillusionment with their SOA plans? What is required is SOA Governance: the best practice of aligning technology around the way the business operates (and not vice versa, like you used to see with monolithic systems that controlled business processes more than enabling them).

According to Gartner analyst Frank Kenney, SOA Governance is made up of 3 components: the Registry (or Repository) where the assets of SOA are stored and catalogued, Policy which is meant to keep track of the "rules of engagement" and service levels expected in SOA, and an element that can get overlooked in an idealized world: SOA Testing, which is needed to ensure SOA Lifecycle Quality.

What good is a registry if it contains assets that are not sufficiently tested at both the Service, and the implementation layer? What good is a policy if it is not properly enforced at runtime? Strong testing is required to ensure that the SOA application continually meets the business needs – in development, integration and deployment.

This whitepaper will discuss the fundamental drivers for SOA Governance, and the best practices for achieving SOA with the maximum potential value upside and less business risk, due to SOA Lifecycle Quality.
