iTKO LISA Case Study: Western Power As Western Power has embraced the use of an Enterprise Service Bus (ESB), applications which were once quite separate had become highly interconnected. While integration of applications brings benefits in terms of automation and process efficiency, it also means that changes can incur unintended negative consequences on each other. Unit tests, while useful for testing each component application, cannot effectively test the entire value chain. Western Power needed an end-to-end testing tool that could test the interactions between applications, and virtualize unavailable services and systems.
The SOA team had a couple of incidents where mature systems suddenly generated faults, even though they had been unchanged in some cases for years. The root cause of these faults was difficult to track down, but eventually a pattern emerged which showed that seemingly minor changes in other applications were impacting others in unexpected ways.
